This site exists because coordinating a fun summer for little kids is genuinely hard work — and most parents are doing it alone, one library website at a time.
I'm a Lake County mom with young kids, and every spring I found myself spending hours clicking through library calendars, park district pages, and Facebook groups just to figure out what was happening that week. I started keeping a spreadsheet for myself. Then I thought: other families need this too.
Central Lake County Fun is my attempt to take that invisible coordination load off your plate — so you can spend less time searching and more time actually doing the thing.
This is a free community resource. If it saved you some searching, a small contribution toward server costs and coffee is always appreciated.
This site is built with families of young children in mind — babies, toddlers, and kids in the preschool and early elementary years. Most of the events highlighted are storytimes, nature programs, free play, crafts, and community festivals that work best for the under-8 crowd.
That said, many events are open to all ages and families, and you'll find things worth doing at every stage. Use the age filter to zero in on what fits your kids right now.
We focus on Central Lake County, Illinois — events within a reasonable drive of the Grayslake area. That means libraries, park districts, and forest preserves across the communities you're already in.
Events are collected using web scraping tools that pull directly from library and park district calendars, then filtered and spot-checked. We look for events that are free or low-cost, family-friendly, and geared toward young children — and we remove duplicates and out-of-area listings.
We don't include everything. Events that require grade 3+ or are primarily for adults, teens, or older kids are generally filtered out. When in doubt, we err on the side of including something and letting families decide.
This site reflects events collected in May 2026. Some events run through September. We recommend checking back as the summer progresses — and always clicking through to the event page for the most current details.
